Coatings & Additives

Coatings & Additives

MCC is also a competent supplier in the field of Coatings & Additives. Over the years, we have built an excellent reputation based on our specialist expertise, reliability and experience in the sector.

Every single day, we encounter coating products and additives in hundreds of everyday products. Besides improving the surface of materials such as metal, paper, card or plastic, they also add new properties such as chemical and physical stability.

The required properties often include resistance to light, moisture, oxygen or mechanical stress, as well as improved antifriction properties or solubility. Coatings and additives are thus often used e.g. as a component in packaging, varnishes, adhesives and sealants.

This division also includes high-performance additives for oils and hydraulic fluids that help increase the efficiency, performance and life expectancy of engines and hydraulic systems. As a result, they can e.g. reduce the fuel consumption and thus also the CO2 emissions of commercial vehicles.

Plastic Additives

Plastic Additives

Plastics additives are one of the core competencies of MCC’s activities. This area mainly involves additives for the PVC stabilisers industry.

Before PVC can be processed into products, it has to be blended with special additives that have a crucial influence on the performance properties of the PVC product. The properties PVC is required to have are extremely diverse – as are the areas of application for the additives.

The most important additives for use in PVC are substances that improve physical properties such as temperature, light and weather resistance, toughness, elasticity and transparency. Additives are also used to improve workability. All the substances are permanently bonded with the finished PVC product.

The PVC additives used today have to satisfy demanding requirements. They have to be used in minimum amounts to achieve maximum effect – without that effect being compromised by the various processes used for the production of the respective moulded component. The PVC additives have to give the finished product the desired properties for the duration of its useful life.

In line with changing environmental attitudes, the PVC-processing industry has decided to ban heavy metal-based stabiliser systems from the market (Vinyl 2010). In accordance with the new requirements, MCC has switched its focus to new, eco-friendly raw materials. In future, new products such as various metal acetylacetonates will replace the old lead-based products.

Even if it isn’t always obvious at first glance – our products are in use almost everywhere you look, helping to make your life easier and more enjoyable.

Polymers (PVOH & PVB)

Polymers (PVOH & PVB)

MCC has been a leading distributor of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) products for many years, serving customers in the paper, textile, building materials, ceramic and adhesive industries as well as in many other sectors.

Due to their numerous chemical and physical properties, polymers are very versatile and suitable for many different areas of application:

  • Polyvinyl alcohols have excellent film-forming and bonding properties. They are water soluble, reactive, biodegradable and recyclable.

  • They provide outstanding carrier properties for optical brighteners and thus help to improve e.g. the whiteness of paper. They bond the fibres into a smooth surface and influence viscosity by acting as a thickening agent.

  • In the production of aqueous adhesive raw material solutions, polyvinyl alcohol offers the advantage of a more uniform structure with high adhesive strength and minimal raw material input as compared to other, natural adhesives such as casein and dextrin.

  • As a raw material in the production of remoistenable adhesive for gummed paper as found on the back of postage stamps or the flaps of envelopes and mailers.

  • In finishings or as an emulsifier, e.g. as a component in emulsion paints, grouts or primers.

We offer our customers raw materials for a wide range of different applications and deliver them quickly and reliably. We are always happy to accommodate individual requests and, together with our customers, are constantly working on the development of user-specific products.

Rare Earths

Rare Earths

Due to the growing commercial relevance of “Rare Earths” (RE) in recent years, MCC has been devoting intense effort to their procurement and processing for some time now.

The 17 rare earths are a set of elements in the periodic table (“earth” is an old term for “oxide”). The set comprises the following elements, ordered by atomic number: Scandium (Sc, 21), Yttrium (Y, 39), the lanthanoids Lanthan (La, 57), Cerium (Ce, 58), Praseodymium (Pr,59), Neodymium (Nd, 60), Promethium (Pm, 61), Samarium (Sm, 62), Europium (Eu, 63), Gadolinium (Gd, 64), Terbium (Tb, 65), Dysprosium (Dy, 66), Holmium (Ho,67), Erbium (Er, 68), Thulium (Tm, 69), Ytterbium (Yb, 70) and Lutetium (Lu, 71).

Today it is hard to imagine everyday life without the RE metals and they have become indispensable for the manufacture of modern technologies. They can be used for a broad spectrum of applications:

  • In small amounts as a component in catalytic converters for cars, special steels, nickel-metal hydride batteries and high-performance permanent magnets of the kind used in generators for producing wind and hydro power.

  • Compounds of RE metals are used for the luminescent materials in LCD and plasma screens, LEDs and special types of glass with a high refractive index.

  • In industry, the RE metals and their salts are for instance used in catalysts for the petrochemical industry, as alloy additives, in polishing agents, ceramic capacitors, colour pigments and glass dyes.

The rare earth metals are found in approximately 100 known minerals such as monazite, bastnäsite and Xenotime and can never be mined alone. As a result, the refining process is extremely complex. The concentration of RE elements in the ore is site-specific and does not correspond to the actual technical requirements of the respective RE metals. In order to cover growing demand and offset Chinese export restrictions, new RE deposits are currently being investigated and developed all over the world. Besides sources in China, MCC is also able to draw on reliable and established sources in India.
